Which Holidays Stop Trash Pickup in LA? Mark Your Calendar
Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) aligns its trash pickup holidays closely with major federal holidays.
In 2027, expect no service on:
- New Year’s Day (January 1, Friday)
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 18, Monday)
- Presidents Day (February 15, Monday)
- Memorial Day (May 31, Monday)
- Independence Day (July 4, Sunday, observed July 5, Monday)
- Labor Day (September 6, Monday)
- Veterans Day (November 11, Thursday)
- Thanksgiving Day (November 25, Thursday)
- Christmas Day (December 25, Saturday, observed December 24, Friday)
When trash pickup falls on or immediately after these holidays, expect a one-day delay for the remainder of the week.
This domino effect means Friday pickups shift to Saturday, and so on. baltimore county provides further details on this.
How Does the One-Day Delay Affect Your Weekly Trash Routine?
Picture this: it’s the Monday after MLK Day, and your regular pickup moves to Tuesday. That means your Tuesday trash now waits until Wednesday.
For residents juggling work, school, and other commitments, this slight shift can cause unexpected clutter.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
- Holiday occurs on a weekday—no trash pickup that day.
- All pickups scheduled after the holiday move forward by one day.
- Saturday pickups may be added to catch up.
From personal experience, missing these schedule shifts leads to bins sitting out for days, attracting stray animals and triggering neighborhood complaints.
Trust me, setting a quick reminder on your phone after every holiday saves you a lot of hassle.

Sometimes holidays land on weekends, shaking up the standard pickup flow even more.
In 2027, Independence Day lands on a Sunday; LADWP observes it on Monday, July 5. This shifts Monday pickups to Tuesday, and so forth.
Saturday pickups may be scheduled to catch up, but not always. You can also check out additional insights here for related insights. So, keep your eyes peeled for announcements.
What’s frustrating is that not every neighborhood gets the same treatment—some areas have more flexibility, others face stricter schedules.
A concrete example: last year, a friend in East LA had his entire week’s trash delay, while downtown pickups stayed mostly on schedule.
